Aquarium pH often falls overnight because plants, fish and microorganisms continue respiring after the lights go out, releasing carbon dioxide. Dissolved CO2 forms carbonic acid and lowers pH. During the day, actively growing plants consume CO2, so pH can rise again. A modest repeatable swing can be normal, but large swings deserve attention to KH, aeration and CO2 management.
If you test pH first thing in the morning and again late in the light period, you may get two different numbers even though nothing was added to the tank. That does not automatically mean the water is unstable in a dangerous way; it may simply reflect the aquarium's daily carbon cycle.

- KH is very low or falling.
- Injected CO2 is not switching off correctly.
