Why Does Aquarium pH Change Overnight?

If you test pH first thing in the morning and again late in the light period, you may get two different numbers even though nothing was added to the tank. That does not automatically mean the water is unstable in a dangerous way; it may simply reflect the aquarium's daily carbon cycle.

What happens after the lights go out

Photosynthesis stops in darkness, but respiration continues. Fish, plants and microorganisms consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

As CO2 accumulates, a small amount forms carbonic acid and the pH can fall.

What happens during the light period

Healthy plants consume CO2 while photosynthesising. As dissolved CO2 decreases, pH commonly rises again.

Injected-CO2 planted tanks can show especially clear day-night movement depending on the timing of the gas system.

KH controls how easily pH moves

Low KH means weaker buffering, so the same acid input can create a larger pH movement. High KH resists change more strongly.

If the daily swing is unexpectedly large, test KH rather than treating pH in isolation.

Compare readings at the same time of day

When tracking long-term pH, test at a consistent point in the light cycle. Otherwise normal daily CO2 movement can look like a random trend.

Morning-to-evening comparisons are useful when you specifically want to measure the daily swing.

When to investigate further

  • Fish show breathing distress overnight.
  • KH is very low or falling.
  • Injected CO2 is not switching off correctly.
  • Surface agitation is unusually weak.
  • The pH swing is becoming larger over time rather than staying repeatable.
