Aquarium pH can differ from tap water because dissolved carbon dioxide changes after the water sits and aerates, while the aquarium also contains biological acids, substrate, rock, wood and buffering minerals that can shift pH. Compare a fresh tap sample with one that has been aerated for several hours, then test KH and inspect materials in the tank. The useful question is whether the difference is stable and appropriate for the livestock, not whether the two numbers are identical.
A tap-water pH test taken immediately from the tap can be misleading because pressurised mains water has a different dissolved-gas balance from water that has been sitting in an open aquarium. Once the water enters the tank, biology and materials add further influences.

Dissolved carbon dioxide can change the reading
Water under pressure can contain more dissolved carbon dioxide than it will after sitting in contact with air. As CO2 leaves the water, carbonic acid falls and pH can rise.
The opposite can happen when source water has low CO2 and the aquarium accumulates more from respiration.
KH determines how strongly the water resists change
High KH buffers pH and tends to keep it close to a stable alkaline value. Low KH allows acids and dissolved CO2 to move pH more easily.
That is why pH and KH should be interpreted together rather than as separate isolated numbers.
Aquarium materials can alter pH
- Limestone, crushed coral and shell material can raise KH and pH.
- Active aquasoils may lower KH and pH.
- Driftwood and botanicals can contribute organic acids, especially in soft water.
- Remineralising salts can raise hardness and buffering.
Biological activity changes chemistry over time
Nitrification and organic breakdown produce acids. Plants and animals also move carbon dioxide up and down across the daily light cycle.
These processes mean the aquarium is chemically active even when you add nothing new.
How to compare tap and tank properly
Test the aquarium at a consistent time of day. For the source water, test once immediately and again after a sample has been aerated or left open long enough to equilibrate.
If the tank remains very different, test GH and KH and review rock, substrate, wood and additives before trying to correct pH.
