Put the aquarium on a purpose-built or properly load-rated stand on a level, stable floor. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces and strong draughts. Leave clearance for filters, hoses and lid access, keep aerosols and smoke away, and make sure you can carry or hose water to and from the tank without crossing a room full of obstacles.
Aquarium placement affects far more than how the room looks. Once filled, the system is heavy and awkward to move, and the location changes how stable the temperature is, how much algae-driving sunlight the tank receives and whether maintenance is convenient enough to do consistently.

Start with support and floor loading
A filled aquarium is a permanent load, not a lightweight ornament. The stand must stay flat and stable without wobble or sagging. Purpose-built aquarium stands are designed around the way a particular tank needs to be supported; ordinary furniture is not automatically equivalent.
Think about the whole system weight, not simply litres of water. Glass or acrylic, substrate, stone, wood, equipment and cabinet all add to the load.
Avoid direct sun and heat sources
Direct sunlight can create unwanted heat gain and make algae management harder. Radiators, stoves and fireplaces can create local temperature swings that an aquarium heater is not designed to cancel out cleanly.

Leave real maintenance clearance
- Enough space above the tank to remove the lid and reach the substrate.

- Room to catch drips and work safely around plugs.
Plan electricity as part of the location
Filters, heaters, lights and air pumps put electricity close to water. Use properly protected sockets and arrange cables so water cannot simply run down a cable into a plug. Follow the equipment maker's electrical instructions and keep connections out of splash zones.
Do not choose a location that forces you into a chain of overloaded adaptors or where plugs will sit directly below likely drips.
Consider traffic, vibration and airborne contaminants
A tank beside a slamming door, speaker, busy corridor or play area may be exposed to repeated disturbance. Some shy fish do better in a calmer part of the room.
Keep cigarette smoke, sprays, paint fumes, aerosols and cleaning chemicals away from the aquarium. Water surfaces and air pumps can bring airborne contaminants into contact with the tank.
