Sponge filters are ideal for fry, shrimp, quarantine tanks and fish that prefer low current. Canister filters offer much more media capacity and stronger, controllable circulation, making them better suited to larger aquariums or heavier waste loads. A sponge is cheap and easy to maintain; a canister costs more and requires hose and seal maintenance.

Sponge output is diffuse and gentle. Canister returns can create strong circulation but can be softened with a spray bar or outlet adjustment.
Do not size a canister so aggressively that the fish cannot rest.
A hybrid approach
Many aquarists run a small sponge alongside a canister. It adds aeration and gives you a mature spare filter for quarantine without materially complicating the main system.
