Most freshwater aquariums benefit from visible surface ripples across a meaningful part of the tank. The water does not need to splash violently. More agitation is useful in warm water, heavily stocked tanks or during low-oxygen events, while injected-CO2 planted tanks may deliberately use gentler movement during the light period. Watch fish behaviour and ensure there are no oily stagnant surface zones.
Gas exchange occurs where water meets air. The filter outlet, spray bar or bubbles should keep enough of that surface moving for oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide to leave.

What healthy surface movement looks like
You should see ripples and gentle movement rather than a perfectly glassy surface. That indicates water from below is being brought to the air-water boundary.
A thin oily biofilm is often a clue that circulation across the surface is too weak.
When to increase agitation
- Fish breathe rapidly or gather at the surface.
- Water temperature rises during hot weather.
- Stocking is heavy.
- Medication or bacterial activity increases oxygen demand.
- The filter return barely disturbs the surface.
When too much becomes a problem
Violent turbulence can exhaust weak swimmers, splash water out of the tank and create salt or mineral creep around equipment. In CO2-injected planted tanks, excessive agitation can also waste injected gas.
Spread the movement broadly rather than creating one powerful jet.
Outlet position matters
A return aimed just along the surface can create broad rippling with less current lower in the tank. A spray bar placed near the top can do the same across a longer aquarium.

Surface agitation is best judged by gas-exchange performance and fish behaviour, not by an arbitrary ripple height. Different tank shapes, stocking levels and temperatures need different amounts.
