When a filter may be enough
A HOB, canister return or internal filter aimed at the surface can create strong gas exchange without a separate air pump.
If the surface is moving, fish breathe normally and the tank is not heavily stocked, extra aeration may add little.
When an air pump is valuable
- Warm weather when oxygen solubility falls.
- Heavily stocked or high-demand tanks.

Air pumps do not replace filtration
