The devices can look similar once they are bubbling, but their water path is different. That difference determines whether they merely move water or actually filter it.

What an air stone does

An air stone breaks incoming air into bubbles. The rising bubble column lifts water and disturbs the surface, improving gas exchange.

It does not provide much dedicated media for debris or bacteria.

What a sponge filter does

Air rises through an uplift tube, pulling water through the sponge. The sponge catches debris and provides a large oxygenated surface for beneficial bacteria.

That makes it a complete low-flow filter, not just an aerator.

Which is better for fry and shrimp

Sponge filters are especially useful because the intake itself is safe and porous. They provide food-rich microbial surfaces as well as filtration.

An air stone is safe but does not process waste in the same way.

Noise and adjustment

Both depend on the same air-pump noise and can be controlled with valves. Larger sponge filters may need more air to produce useful water movement.

Keep the pump above the water line or use a check valve.

You can use both

A tank with a HOB or canister may use a separate air stone purely for extra oxygen. A breeding tank may use only sponge filters because they provide both jobs at once.
