Root tabs are concentrated nutrient sources pushed into the substrate near plant roots, making them ideal for swords, Cryptocoryne and runner-forming plants. Liquid fertiliser distributes nutrients through the water column and suits Java fern, Anubias, mosses and many stem plants. Neither method is universally better because they feed plants through different pathways.
The simplest way to choose is to ask where the plant gets most of its nutrients.

When root tabs make sense
- Amazon swords in gravel or sand.
- Cryptocoryne with established root systems.
- Vallisneria and other runner-forming plants.
- Carpeting plants growing in inert substrate.
When liquid fertiliser makes sense
- Java fern and Anubias attached to hardscape.
- Mosses and floating plants.
- Stem plants that absorb strongly through leaves and stems.
- Tanks with nutrient-rich substrate but water-column deficiencies.
Using both is normal
A mixed planted aquarium often contains both heavy root feeders and water-column feeders. Root tabs can target the former while a balanced liquid fertiliser supports the latter.
Avoid exposed root tabs
Push root tabs deep enough that fish and shrimp cannot easily dig them out. Exposed concentrated fertiliser can create a local nutrient spike and unnecessary mess.
Dose based on plant mass
A lightly planted tank usually needs less fertiliser than a dense fast-growing aquascape. Increase only when growth and testing show a need.
