Floating plants can cover the surface rapidly because they have direct access to light and atmospheric CO2. Remove excess whole plants before they form a continuous mat, use floating rings or airline barriers to keep feeding and equipment areas clear, and avoid letting plants clog filter intakes or become constantly submerged by surface flow. Regular thinning also exports nutrients from the aquarium.
Healthy floaters are supposed to multiply. Management means deciding how much surface coverage you want and removing the rest before it becomes a problem.

Set a coverage target
Decide whether you want light shade, half-surface coverage or a denser blackwater-style canopy. Remove plants once they exceed that target rather than waiting for a complete mat.
Use floating barriers
Airline tubing, purpose-made floating rings or rigid barriers can protect open areas around filter outlets, feeding points and emergent equipment.
Thin whole plants, not just leaves
Removing whole plants is faster and cleaner than constantly trimming individual leaves. Take out the weakest, smallest or most crowded plants first.
Protect submerged plants from shade
Watch the aquarium floor. If rooted plants become leggy, pale or stagnant, too much surface coverage may be cutting their light.
Use removed growth as nutrient export
Floating plants store nitrogen and other nutrients in their tissue. Discarding or rehoming excess growth physically removes some of those nutrients from the system.
