The right testing schedule is not the same for a brand-new tank and a five-year-old aquarium that has been stable for months. Testing is most valuable around change: cycling, new livestock, medication, filter maintenance, power cuts and unexplained fish behaviour.

During fishless cycling

Test ammonia and nitrite often enough to see the cycle move through its stages. Daily testing is useful when you are learning the process or approaching the point where the cycle may be complete; every two or three days can be enough during slower early stages.

Record results so you can see trends rather than reacting to one isolated reading.

After adding fish

A new stocking group increases the waste load on the filter. Test ammonia and nitrite over the following days, especially after a substantial addition or when the filter is still relatively young.

If both remain at zero and the fish are behaving normally, testing can gradually return to the tank's normal routine.

In an established aquarium

Stable, lightly stocked tanks with predictable maintenance may not need a full test panel every day or even every week. Many keepers use weekly or monthly checks as a baseline while relying on observation and regular water changes in between.

Sensitive species, heavily stocked tanks or aquariums with deliberately altered water chemistry justify more frequent checks.

Test immediately when something changes

  • Fish breathe rapidly, gasp or become unusually inactive.
  • A fish dies unexpectedly.
  • The filter stops, leaks or loses major flow.
  • You replace or heavily clean biological media.
  • A large amount of food is accidentally added.
  • A power cut interrupts filtration for an extended period.
  • The tank becomes cloudy, smells unusual or develops unexplained algae.
  • You change water source, remineralisation or pH-adjustment strategy.

Do not test numbers you cannot interpret

A useful routine focuses on parameters that drive decisions. Ammonia and nitrite are core tests during cycling and emergencies. Nitrate helps track accumulated nitrogen. pH, GH and KH matter when species requirements, source-water changes or chemistry adjustments make them relevant.

More tests are not automatically better if every small variation triggers unnecessary chemical correction.
