The nitrogen cycle is the difference between a container of water and a functioning aquarium ecosystem. Fish continually produce nitrogenous waste. In a mature tank, bacteria and other microorganisms on filter media, substrate and surfaces process that waste. In a brand-new tank, those organisms are not yet present in enough numbers, so the aquarium must be cycled before normal stocking.

Ammonia enters an aquarium from fish waste, uneaten food and decomposing organic matter. It is toxic to fish. During cycling, ammonia-oxidising microorganisms establish and convert ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic.

A second group of nitrifying microorganisms converts nitrite into nitrate. Nitrate is generally less acutely toxic and is controlled through water changes, plant uptake and sensible stocking.

Why there is no fixed cycling time

Cycling speed depends on temperature, pH, alkalinity, oxygen, filter surface area, ammonia availability and whether mature media or a viable bottled culture was added. Some aquariums establish in a few weeks; others take longer.

How mature filter media helps

Moving a portion of established biological media from a healthy aquarium can introduce a large, active nitrifying population and shorten startup substantially.
