Mature filter media, viable bottled bacteria, warm oxygenated water and suitable pH can speed establishment; low pH, low temperature, weak flow or an inconsistent ammonia source can slow it. The cycle is complete when the filter reliably processes the intended ammonia load and both ammonia and nitrite return to zero.
Cycling time is one of the most searched aquarium questions because shops and guides often offer a simple number. The biology is not that tidy. Nitrifying microorganisms reproduce according to environmental conditions and available substrate, so two apparently identical tanks can take different amounts of time.

Why four to six weeks is only a rough range
Many unseeded freshwater aquariums do establish within several weeks, which is why four-to-six-week estimates are common. The RSPCA is careful to note that there is no exact timeframe.

The finish line is functional, not visual
Clear water does not mean the aquarium is cycled. Cloudy water does not necessarily mean it is not. Cycling is about the filter's ability to process nitrogen waste.
Confirm that ammonia and nitrite fall to zero under the cycling method you are following, then reduce excessive nitrate if needed before stocking.
What to do if the cycle takes much longer
Check pH, KH, temperature, ammonia source and filter flow. Verify the test kit is being used correctly and that the filter contains suitable biological media.
Do not respond by adding fish 'to kick-start it'. Fix the environmental bottleneck instead.
