You can change aquarium water frequently without harming the biological cycle because most beneficial bacteria live on surfaces. Problems arise when new water differs sharply in temperature, pH, GH or KH, or when frequent water changes are combined with excessive filter and substrate cleaning. The phrase 'too many water changes' often mixes two different ideas: replacing water and disturbing the aquarium. You can replace cleanly prepared water often while leaving the filter, substrate and biological surfaces largely undisturbed.

Why frequent changes do not normally kill beneficial bacteria
Nitrifying bacteria colonise filter media, substrate, rock and other surfaces. Removing water does not remove the majority of that population.
A cycle is more likely to be damaged by replacing all biological media, letting it dry or exposing it to disinfectants.
What can make frequent changes stressful
- Large temperature differences.
- Sudden pH or hardness changes.
- Untreated chlorine or chloramine.
- Very rough capture or disturbance of fish.
