For a normal fishless cycle, do not add fish while nitrite is still measurable. The safer target is 0 mg/L ammonia and 0 mg/L nitrite after the aquarium has processed the cycling input. If fish are already in the aquarium, use conditioned partial water changes and close testing to keep nitrite as close to zero as practical while the filter matures.
Nitrite is sometimes treated as a harmless intermediate because it appears naturally during cycling. Natural does not mean safe. The whole purpose of cycling before stocking is to make sure the tank can process both ammonia and nitrite without exposing fish to them.

Why nitrite is a stop sign
Nitrite interferes with normal oxygen transport in fish. A positive reading means the biological filter is still allowing a toxic intermediate to accumulate.
Waiting until zero removes an avoidable welfare risk.
A falling nitrite reading is progress, not completion
The second bacterial stage may take longer to mature than the first. A decline from a very high reading is encouraging, but the tank is not fully ready until the chosen cycle test is passed.
Do not rush the final stage because ammonia is already zero.
If fish are already present
- Test nitrite frequently.
- Use conditioned partial water changes when nitrite is detectable.
- Feed conservatively without starving the fish.
- Keep the filter running continuously.
- Provide good oxygenation.
- Do not add more fish until readings remain stable at zero.
Do not rely on detoxifier claims alone
Some conditioners are marketed as temporarily detoxifying nitrogen compounds. Even when used, they do not replace establishing biological filtration and testing.
Use products according to their labels and still aim for a stable zero nitrite reading.
