Reverse-osmosis water is useful when tap water has GH, KH or dissolved solids that are too high for sensitive soft-water species, specialised shrimp, breeding projects or a target planted-aquarium recipe. Because RO removes most minerals and buffering, pure RO water is usually not suitable as a direct long-term replacement for ordinary freshwater livestock. Blend it with tap water or remineralise it to the GH and KH your aquarium needs.

Why pure RO needs rebuilding
RO water has very little GH or KH. Fish, shrimp, snails and plants still need minerals, while very low KH leaves pH weakly buffered.
Use a measured remineralisation product or a repeatable tap-and-RO blend rather than guessing.
Introduce RO gradually
Changing from hard tap water to a much softer mix alters osmotic conditions and buffering. Make the transition across water changes unless an emergency requires otherwise.
Measure GH, KH, pH and temperature in the prepared replacement water before adding it.
Keep the recipe consistent
Once you find a suitable mix, write down the ratio and remineralisation dose. Consistency matters more than chasing tiny numerical adjustments each week.
