Water testing feels objective because it produces numbers and colour blocks, but there are several places where technique can distort the result. Standardising how you test makes trends far more useful.

Use the exact sample volume

Liquid kits are calibrated for a specific water volume. Filling above or below the line changes the ratio between sample and reagent.

Rinse test tubes with aquarium water before use and avoid soap residue.

Follow reagent instructions literally

Some bottles need vigorous shaking because active chemicals settle. Others require a fixed number of drops or a timed wait between reagents.

Do not combine instructions from different brands or assume every nitrate test works the same way.

Read colour at the correct time

Many tests continue developing after the official reading time. Looking five or ten minutes late can produce a different colour from the one the chart is designed for.

Use a timer when troubleshooting rather than estimating.

Lighting changes colour perception

  • Use daylight or neutral white light.
  • Avoid strongly coloured room lighting.
  • Hold the sample against the background specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not compare a wet strip long after the stated reading time.

Repeat results that do not make sense

If a mature tank suddenly appears to have extreme ammonia or a planted aquarium jumps dramatically in nitrate overnight, retest before redesigning the system.

Then compare tap water, check expiry dates and use another test method if the decision is important.
