A canister rated at a strong flow when new will not keep that figure indefinitely unless the water path stays clear.

Start with the intake side
Prefilter sponges and intake strainers collect the largest debris and can choke flow surprisingly quickly. Clean them before dismantling the entire canister.
A partially blocked intake can also make the pump noisy.
Mechanical media is the next restriction
Fine floss and dense pads clog faster than coarse sponge. Rinse reusable coarse media and replace fine disposable polishing material when it is genuinely clogged.
Do not throw away biological media just to increase flow.
Clean the hoses
