An aquarium heater may run for long periods when the room is cold, the heater is undersized, the tank is open-top or water movement around the heater is poor. If the heater runs continuously yet the aquarium never reaches its set temperature, capacity or installation is likely the issue. If the heater continues heating after the tank is above the set point, treat that as a possible stuck thermostat and disconnect it safely.
The heater indicator being on is not automatically a fault. The key question is whether the water is below, at or above the target while the heater is running.
Check the actual water temperature
Use an independent thermometer. If the tank is still below target, the heater may simply be working hard against heat loss.
If the tank is already too warm and the heater remains energised, take the situation more seriously.
Undersized heaters run longer
A small heater in a large tank may stay on continuously because it cannot replace heat as fast as the aquarium loses it.
Compare wattage with actual water volume and the room-to-water temperature difference.
Look for excess heat loss
- Cold room or draught.
- Open top with strong evaporation.
- Tank against a cold wall or window.
- Large water changes with cold replacement water.
- Uncovered sump or external plumbing.
Circulation matters
If warm water is not carried away from the heater, the local thermostat may cycle strangely while the far side remains cool. Position the heater in moving water and measure temperature elsewhere in the tank.
Know when to replace it
A heater that ignores its set point, shows visible damage or behaves erratically should not be trusted. Disconnect it, allow it to cool and replace or test it according to the manufacturer's guidance.
