For most submersible aquarium heaters, position the heater near a filter outlet or another source of water movement so warmed water is distributed throughout the tank. Keep decorations and substrate away from the heater body, respect the minimum water line and use the orientation allowed by the manufacturer. Put a thermometer away from the heater so you can verify the far side of the aquarium is also reaching the target temperature.
A heater measures temperature at one point, but the whole tank needs to be warm. Flow turns a local heat source into even aquarium temperature.
Use moving water
A filter return, powerhead or circulation path carries heat away from the heater and reduces local hot spots. Fluval and Aquarium Co-Op both recommend positioning heaters where water can circulate freely around them.
Do not wedge a heater tightly behind solid decor.
Follow the model's water-level markings
Submersible does not mean every heater can be installed in any position or depth. Respect minimum and maximum immersion markings and the instruction manual.
Never operate a glass heater out of water.
Keep substrate and hardscape clear
Contact with gravel, rocks or decorations can create uneven heating and physical stress on a heater tube. Leave space around the heater for water movement.

Measure away from the heater
Place the thermometer in a different part of the tank so it reports whether heat is reaching the whole aquarium, not just the warmest zone.
Long tanks may need extra circulation or two heaters.
Unplug before water changes
If a water change could expose the heater, unplug it and allow it to cool before lowering the water level. Follow the manufacturer's wait time before removing or re-energising it.

Should the heater go near the filter intake or outlet?
Either can work if there is good water movement, but near the return is a common placement because warm water is immediately carried across the tank.
Can I hide the heater behind plants?
Yes if water can circulate freely and leaves or hardscape are not pressed against the heater.

No. Place it elsewhere to verify even temperature distribution.
