Aquarium filter media should not all be replaced on the same schedule. Biological media is designed to host beneficial bacteria and can often last for years. Replacing a whole filter cartridge can feel hygienic, but it may discard a large portion of the aquarium's mature bacterial colony. Media should be managed according to its function, not because it looks brown.
Biological media is usually kept
Ceramic rings, sintered media and mature sponges provide surface area for nitrifying microorganisms. Unless they are crumbling or contaminated beyond safe cleaning, keeping them preserves biological stability.
Mechanical media can often be reused
Coarse sponges can be rinsed repeatedly. Fine floss or polishing pads may clog or deform more quickly and are replaced when rinsing no longer restores useful flow.
Chemical media has a different lifespan
Activated carbon, phosphate removers and specialised resins work by adsorption or ion exchange and eventually become exhausted. Their replacement timing depends on the product, pollutant load and purpose.
Do not replace everything at once
If multiple media pieces genuinely need replacement, stagger the changes where practical so established surfaces remain in the filter. New media can be run alongside old media before the old piece is removed.
Brown does not mean bad
Mature media normally becomes stained with biofilm and fine debris. Judge it by structural condition, clogging and function rather than colour alone.
