The most controllable way to lower KH is to dilute high-KH source water with RO or deionised water. That reduces the amount of carbonate and bicarbonate entering the aquarium. Lower KH gradually because weaker buffering makes pH easier to change. Avoid trying to overcome high KH with repeated acid dosing; the pH can rebound until the buffering is genuinely reduced.
If your pH refuses to stay lower after every adjustment, high KH is often the reason. Carbonate buffering neutralises added acid, so a permanent change requires reducing the source of that buffering rather than simply adding more acid.

Test the tap before the tank
If the tap water has high KH, ordinary water changes continually restore the same buffering. The long-term solution is therefore a new replacement-water mix rather than a one-off display-tank treatment.
Use RO water for controlled dilution
RO or deionised water contains very little carbonate hardness. Blending it with tap water lowers KH predictably and usually lowers GH as well.
Test the blend before use so you know what chemistry is entering the aquarium.
Reduce KH in stages
- Adjust the blend over several water changes.
- Retest pH and KH after each stage.
- Avoid dropping buffering rapidly in a stocked tank.
- Keep the final water recipe consistent once the target is reached.
Understand the pH consequence
Lower KH means less resistance to acids, so pH may settle lower and may also become less stable. That is useful for some soft-water species but risky if buffering is taken too far.
Monitor rather than chasing a single low number.
Do not confuse lower KH with better water
Hard-water fish often benefit from stronger buffering. Lower KH only when the livestock or husbandry goal genuinely calls for softer, less alkaline water.
