There is no single turnover rate that suits every freshwater aquarium. A common starting range is several tank volumes per hour, but fish behaviour, filter type, plant mass, tank shape and waste load matter. Flow should keep water circulating through the filter and gently disturb the surface without pinning fish in corners or flattening plants. Measure actual tank volume and compare it with the filter's realistic output rather than relying only on the box rating.
Flow and filtration are related but not identical. You can have a powerful pump with poor media, or excellent media with weak circulation. The useful target is balanced movement through the whole system.

Think in turnover, then adjust
Turnover is the filter's hourly flow divided by tank volume. It gives a useful comparison between tanks of different sizes.
Use it as a starting point, then observe whether debris reaches the intake and whether fish can rest comfortably.
Species change the answer
- Bettas and long-finned fish often prefer gentler current.
- Hillstream and river species may enjoy stronger directional flow.
- Shrimp and fry benefit from gentle intakes and broad, diffuse movement.
- Large messy fish may need stronger mechanical filtration without necessarily needing a jet-like outlet.
Surface movement is part of the job
Water moving at the surface improves gas exchange by helping carbon dioxide leave and oxygen enter. An outlet aimed across the surface can improve oxygenation without requiring a separate air stone in every tank.
If fish gasp near the surface, treat that as a warning sign and investigate oxygen and water quality immediately.
Real flow is lower than headline flow
Hoses, lift height, packed media and debris all reduce output. A canister rated at a high litres-per-hour figure may deliver considerably less once installed.
Clean mechanical media when flow drops rather than replacing biological media unnecessarily.

Calculate turnover from actual water volume, then check the tank. Good flow should leave few dead zones while still giving fish calm areas.
The best setting is a combination of maths and observed behaviour.
