For most beginners, a single betta is a more defensible 5 gallon fish choice than trying to keep a school of active nano fish. Some specialist tiny species are kept in small tanks by experienced aquarists, but they still need appropriate groups, stable water and horizontal space. Shrimp can be an excellent alternative if the goal is a lively small aquarium rather than specifically keeping fish.
